Choose the right store type

Use supermarkets first for fresh food, frozen items, and weekly groceries instead of relying only on convenience stores.
Compare drugstores for laundry detergent, cleaning supplies, basic over-the-counter medicine, and personal care items.
Check 100-yen shops or daily-goods stores for storage boxes, stationery, kitchen basics, and temporary household items.

First-week shopping basket

Buy three to five days of staples, protein, ready-to-eat backup food, and drinking water before building a full pantry.
Cover laundry, trash bags, toilet paper, wet wipes, towels, extension cords, and phone-charging basics.
Avoid buying too many large or heavy items at first; check storage space, garbage rules, and how you will carry items home.

Payments and point cards

Keep cash plus one main cashless method ready; not every smaller shop accepts foreign cards or QR payments.
Sign up for point cards only at stores you use often instead of creating many accounts on your first shopping trip.

Build a budget routine

Track prices for two weeks so you know which items are better at supermarkets, drugstores, 100-yen shops, or online.
Schedule larger shopping trips for days when you have time, energy, and a reusable bag or small cart.
Check how to dispose of food packaging, plastic, bottles, paper, and large packaging under your building and municipal rules.
