Japan Moving-Out Checklist

Check notice and contract terms first

Confirm the notice period, such as one or two months, and notify through the method required by the contract.
Check short-term cancellation penalties, renewal timing, cleaning fees, and restoration costs.
Put the handover inspection date, key return method, and final payment date on your calendar.

Stop utilities, internet, and subscriptions

Schedule electricity, gas, and water stop dates, and confirm how the final bills will be paid.
Check whether internet or home mobile router contracts need early cancellation, equipment return, or penalty payment.
Update your address with credit cards, banks, insurance, school, employer, and frequently used services.

Trash, cleaning, and handover

Check oversized garbage reservation rules early; do not leave furniture and appliances until the day before moving out.
Before handover, photograph the room, walls, floor, equipment, and cleaning condition.
During handover, ask why any additional fees are charged and request written itemization if unclear.

Address, mail, and after-move checks

Set up mail forwarding so card, bank, insurance, or government mail does not keep going to the old address.
If moving between municipalities, confirm the order for moving-out notice, moving-in notice, and residence card address update.
After moving out, keep final bills, deposit settlement records, and management company messages.
