A practical checklist for deciding whether to buy a commuter pass, preparing route and proof details, and avoiding common Suica/PASMO IC card commute mistakes.

Decide whether it is worth buying

Write down your fixed origin, destination, transfer stations, and real commute days instead of relying only on a map's suggested route.
Compare round-trip fares with 1-month, 3-month, and 6-month pass prices, then account for leave, remote work, and business travel days.
Confirm whether your employer or school requires a specific route, station pair, cheapest route, or most reasonable route.

Prepare purchase details

Prepare station names in Japanese, line names, transfer stations, and desired pass duration to reduce machine or counter mistakes.
For a student commuter pass, ask your school about proof of commuting, student ID, or any required purchase process.
Confirm whether the pass should be on Suica, PASMO, Mobile Suica, Mobile PASMO, or another medium specified by the issuing operator.

Daily use checks

Confirm the exact covered segment. Extra fares may apply outside the segment, with other operators, or when taking a detour.
Keep enough IC balance even with a commuter pass for out-of-segment fares, buses, e-money, or temporary route changes.
When using a new pass for the first time, keep the receipt and check the gate display, IC card display, or app details.

Changes, loss, and refunds

If you move, change school, change job, or alter your route, check whether the segment can be changed or whether refund and repurchase are needed.
For registered IC cards or commuter passes, confirm lost-card reissue conditions, identity documents, and suspension procedures.
Keep purchase receipts, screenshots of pass details, and employer or school application records for reimbursement or corrections.
